Does this replace a clinical hearing test?
No. It is a screening tool and does not give a diagnostic result in dB HL. For a precise diagnosis we perform audiometry with calibrated equipment at our centre, free if it leads to a device fitting.
Why are headphones required?
The digits-in-noise test relies on the signal-to-noise ratio. Headphones isolate the sound from room noise and keep the result reliable; speakers let ambient sound interfere.
No calibration needed?
This test measures the ratio between speech and noise, not an absolute sound level. Because that ratio is independent of device volume, no separate calibration is required.
